The King James Bible Symposium – Bible, the people, the language, the effect

The Symposium, at Harris Manchester College, University of Oxford, was a great success and the three excellent lectures from the Symposium have now been posted on-line.

We are in a very different world from the one that the KJV was introduced into and its words have inspired, motivated and consoled people in the English speaking world through every twist and turn, from there and then to here and now.

The King James Authorised Version came just in time to be read by Tyndale's plough boy. Over the past 400 years as literacy has increased and the English language has spread around the world, it has probably had a greater influence on men and events than any other book.

A scholarly celebration of the 400th Anniversary of our beloved King James Authorised Version of the Holy Bible was held at Harris Manchester College at the University of Oxford on the Fourteenth of May, 2011. The three lectures by the Revd. Professor Alister McGrath, Professor Jonathan Bate, CBE and Professor John Tanner are available to view at:

Our Patron HRH The Prince of Wales celebrates The holy vible with Trust supporters at Clarence House

An eclectic group of 80 academics, MPs, actors, clergy and philanthropists were recently invited into The Prince of Wales's London home to mark the 400th year of the King James Bible. Those joining the Prince included comedian Frank Skinner, writer Adam Nicolson, Culture Minister Ed Vaizey and the actor Timothy West CBE.

Our Chairman, The Rt. Hon. Frank Field MP., introduced The Prince with the sentiment that the work the Trust is doing aims to leave a sustainable legacy, ensuring the world is well equipped to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Bible. The Prince echoed these wishes, explaining the virtues of the Authorised Version which he sees as “part of the very architecture of our culture”. He said that in hard times “all these wonderful passages come back to give ... comfort and solace”.

The Prince was amused that his addition to the Trust’s YouTube Bible project (where he reads from John, Chapter 14) had caused such comments on Twitter as “If The Prince ever gets tired of Princing, he would be a fabulous narrator. What a soothing voice”

We couldn’t agree more.
